Shared Access to Data for Aboriginal Communities Policy

NSW Government holds significant amounts of data about, relating to, or of priority for Aboriginal Peoples and Communities. The NSW Government has committed to improving shared access to government-held data for Aboriginal Communities under Priority Reform 4 (PR4) of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

In developing the Shared Access to Data for Aboriginal Communities Policy (the Policy), the PR4 Central Coordination Function in the Department of Customer Service (DCS) have worked closely with Aboriginal and cross-government stakeholders to ensure the Policy reflects the expectations and needs of Community Requesters to deliver a consistent, whole-of-government approach to accessing government-held data. The NSW Shared Access to Data for Aboriginal Communities Service offers support for Aboriginal Communities to access government-held data under the Policy.

The Policy has been supported through PR4’s formal governance and shared decision-making structures with the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (NSW CAPO). The Policy has also been informed by direct engagement with Aboriginal Requesters and NSW CAPO Leads and organisational officers. The PR4 Central Coordination Function acknowledges the valuable contributions of the Aboriginal voices heard throughout drafting, which have reinforced the importance of transparency, access to meaningful data and working in partnership to building trust between NSW Government and Aboriginal Peoples and Communities.
