Access API

The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) of New South Wales (NSW) is the peak representative body and voice of Aboriginal communities on health in NSW. It represents its members, the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) that deliver culturally appropriate comprehensive primary health care to their communities.

The purpose of the organisation is to:

  • lead the Aboriginal health agenda for better policies, programs, services, and practices
  • ensure Aboriginal knowledge informs decision-making processes
  • support, strengthen and sustain ACCHS.

The AH&MRC also operates a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) under the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) legislation. The role of AH&MRC Ethics Committee is to assess research proposals affecting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities in NSW, and to monitor the collection of data on Aboriginal health in order to ensure these activities are conducted ethically. This role is endorsed by the NSW Health Department and embodied within the the NSW Aboriginal Health Information Guidelines which guide all NSW government agencies responsible for the management of Aboriginal health and health-related information. 

The AH&MRC is governed by a Board of Directors who are Aboriginal people elected by its members on a regional basis. It represents, supports and advocates for its members and their communities on Aboriginal health at state and national levels.
